It's common to get lost at times. Experts estimate that we spend about 47% of our waking hours daydreaming1. However, if your fantasies are too strong and interfere with your daily life,  you may be a maladapted fantasy. 
 What is a maladapted fantasy? Also known as fantasy disorder 2, maladapted fantasies represent a condition in which a person regularly experiences  intense and highly distracting fantasies 3 
-in fact,  the person at work or in front of him. It's so distracting that you might stop interacting with people. These fantasies can be triggered by real-life events 4, sounds, smells, conversational topics, movies, and other stimuli. 
 Maladaptized dreamers can be completely immersed in fantasy away from reality, unknowingly imitating their behavior or talking about the conversations of the characters in the fantasy. The content of the fantasy is detailed and fantastic. Some are described as soap operas, while others portray the ideal version of the daydreamer. 
 Maladaptized fantasies can develop as a coping strategy for trauma.  The inner world  
 can feel safer than the external experience. For example, maladapted daydreamers have found that they frequently engage in these behaviors. They felt out of control of their urge to fantasy, and their fantasy became more vibrant.

Maladaptized fantasies were first defined in 2002 and are not yet recognized in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Illness (DSM-5). The prevalence of maladapted fantasies is unknown6, but this condition is common in people with anxiety, depression, or obsessive-compulsive disorder. More than half of maladapted daydreamers have a mental illness. 

Symptoms of maladapted fantasy 

Symptoms of poorly adjusted daydreaming include the following: An intense and vibrant daydream presented as a story, including

Maladaptive daydreaming ADHD

Attention deficit ADHD (formerly known as ADD) is a subtype of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder that often manifests as the limited duration of attention, distraction, oblivion, or procrastination. .. People with  ADHD who are not attentive make inadvertent mistakes because they struggle to focus, follow detailed instructions, and organize tasks and activities. They are easily distracted by external stimuli and often lose things. They can leave the project unfinished and don't seem to hear when you speak. These are all inadvertent symptoms of ADHD. They are not personal drawbacks.

Is maladaptive daydreaming bad?

Maladaptized fantasies are bad for your health (everyone else said so?). It's drug addiction. MD is a medicine. Most people who don't have MD buy medicine to get rid of the bad ones. However, people with MD  have the power to control their emotions just by dreaming of happiness which can distract you.

Is maladaptive daydreaming rare?

At least anecdotally, it doesn't seem to be particularly unusual, but it's also not particularly common. I'm sure there are a minority of people who suffer from this, but they are not alone. 
 For those who want to know more, maladaptation fantasies are all about keyword maladaptation-it means fantasies that interfere with the patient's lifestyle,  I know they prevent them from eating and sleeping properly. Means in the meantime, and yes, even healthy social interactions. 
 Unlike some conditions like daydreaming, maladapted daydreaming generally begins as an escape from bullying to something like boredom, rather than addiction or choice by the daydreamer. And later, it evolves into a life-threatening state where people have no control over when and how much they escape. 
 Maladaptized fantasies are often keenly aware of the difference between reality and fantasy,  often constructing elaborate worlds and fantasies that are a  source of great creativity for the artists in them. 
 Again, anecdotally, maladapted fantasies themselves look like anxiety and side effects of OCD. You will usually find that one or both are the primary conditions and that with proper treatment that affects one or the other, maladaptation symptoms may disappear or at least be easier to manage. The goal is not to stop the fantasy, but to prevent it from interfering with your lifestyle. 
 Personal Note-I also suffered from maladapted fantasies for many years and eventually came out on the other side-without medication. However, it is not advisable to stick it out for others. This is mainly due to the fact that, among other minor problems, we are less focused. Although there is no guarantee that your situation will be comparable to mine, I also have Asperger's Syndrome and Attention Deficit Disorder. This may also be a factor here. Another reason I don't recommend surviving it should be consuming a chunk of your life while it's still happening, at least theoretically leading to better results.

In 2017, a group of researchers led by Somer, Soffer-Dudek, Ross, and Halpern presented one of the largest and most original research on maladapted fantasies. This was a detailed diagnostic criteria article entitled Maladaptive Daydreaming: Proposed Diagnostic Criteria and their Assessment with a Structural Clinical Interview. 

 This paper contains the Maladaptive Daydreaming Scale, which is a set of 16 questions that rate from 0% to 100%. Answering 0% means that you haven't done what you asked for last month. A 100% answer means that you have consistently performed the questions in the past month. 

 Note: They suggested that those who scored above 50 were probably "clinical-level" misaligned daydreamers. However, they find an error in their dissertation and believe that the correct cutoff is a score of 40. Below

 You need to know how difficult and easy it is to avoid zoning. The stronger the urge to make a dream, the more likely you are to have an MD. 

Dream interference in your life 

 The final section of the maladapted fantasy test is about how this condition affects your daily life. Can't you complete your chores because of a wasted fantasy of your time? If so, you probably have an MD. If not, it may not be as difficult as an immersive fantasy, or it may not be at all.

How to know if you are a maladapted person without testing

 One of the main symptoms of MD is a very vivid, detailed, and structured fantasy. People in this state create orthopedic fictional characters, the universe, and stories in their minds.  According to a 2016 study entitled "Maladaptated Fantasy: Evidence of Under-researched Mental Health Diseases," patients spend 56% of their wake-up time fantasy. So if your day consists of 16 hours, you spend 8.96 hours dreaming of different things. It wastes a lot of time.
